New York State Police have released additional details regarding the fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Thursday morning on the New York State Thruway in Clarkstown.
According to State Police, troopers assigned to the Tarrytown Thruway Barracks responded at approximately 4:40 a.m. to a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on Interstate 87 southbound, on the Exit 14 acceleration lane in the Town of Clarkstown.
A preliminary investigation by the Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that Bravo Nondo, 45, of Albany, had been traveling southbound on I-87 when he stopped his vehicle on the Exit 14 acceleration ramp. For reasons still under investigation, Nondo exited his 2020 Nissan and walked to the rear of the vehicle.
As Nondo’s vehicle was stopped in the acceleration lane, a 2019 Nissan operated by Gregg M. Albaum, 35, of Nanuet, was attempting to enter I-87 southbound via the same ramp. Albaum took evasive action to avoid the stopped vehicle but subsequently struck Nondo.
Life-saving measures were performed at the scene; however, Nondo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Albaum was transported to Nyack Hospital for treatment.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
