Emergency personnel responded early Thursday morning to a tractor-trailer fire on the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway just before the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, causing significant traffic delays for several hours.
Members of the Central Nyack Fire Department, Nyack Fire Department, and Nyack Ambulance were on the scene from approximately 3:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m., working to bring the blaze under control. New York State Police also responded and conducted the investigation.
Officials say the incident began when a Costco tractor-trailer experienced a brake fire, which quickly spread and caused the vehicle to become fully engulfed in flames. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries were reported.
The right lane of the Thruway was closed for several hours while firefighters extinguished the blaze and crews worked to clear the scene, leading to significant traffic delays for morning commuters in the area.
UPDATE 10:15 a.m.: Authorities report that all lanes have now reopened and traffic is gradually returning to normal.
