Last week, the New York State Police (Troop T) issued a total of 747 tickets for violations in work zones along the 570-mile New York State Thruway, including sections in Rockland County.
The targeted enforcement was conducted in support of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which highlights the importance of slowing down, staying alert, and following New York’s Move Over Law to protect highway workers.
Of the total violations issued, 452 were for speeding, 47 for Move Over Law violations, 45 for cell phone or electronic device use, and 203 for other traffic-related offenses.
As part of the initiative, Troop T conducted “Operation Hard Hat” enforcement details in active work zones across Westchester and Rockland Counties. The operation involves troopers posing as construction workers to identify violations and alert nearby uniformed units to take enforcement action.
During just 12 hours of Operation Hard Hat, 313 tickets were issued, including 197 for speeding, 28 for cell phone use, and 27 for Move Over Law violations, along with additional infractions.
Authorities are reminding motorists to prioritize safety by obeying posted speed limits in work zones, staying focused, avoiding distractions, and moving over when possible.
While Work Zone Awareness Week has concluded, State Police say enforcement efforts will continue throughout the 2026 construction season to protect workers and improve roadway safety.
