New York State Police have released additional details about the fatal crash that shut down part of the northbound New York State Thruway early Monday morning in Clarkstown.
The incident occurred on August 11, 2025, at approximately 12:39 a.m., when troopers from State Police Tarrytown responded to a two-car collision on Interstate 87. According to investigators, a 2009 Nissan was disabled—partially in the lane of travel and on the right shoulder—with no lights on for unknown reasons. A 2014 Ford, traveling in the same lane, rear-ended the Nissan, causing both vehicles to spin across all lanes and strike the median on the left shoulder.
The driver of the Nissan, identified as Steven Redner, 47, of Tallman, NY, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ford’s driver, a 25-year-old man from Elmsford, NY, received life-saving treatment from EMS before being rushed to Westchester Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
State Police were assisted by Nanuet EMS and the Nanuet Fire Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
