In the early hours of Saturday morning, September 6, 2025, New York State Police Troopers from SP Tarrytown arrested a Virginia man after discovering two loaded firearms during a welfare check on Interstate 87 in the Town of Clarkstown.
At approximately 12:03 a.m., Troopers observed a black 1996 GMC pickup truck parked on the shoulder of the southbound lanes near Exit 13N. The driver, identified as Montana Madison, 34, of Virginia, was approached for a welfare check. While speaking with him, a Trooper noticed a loaded Kel-Tec .22 caliber semiautomatic handgun in plain view on the front passenger seat.
Madison was immediately detained. During further questioning, he admitted to possessing a loaded Ruger .44 magnum revolver in the rear passenger seat. Both weapons were secured and entered into evidence.
Authorities say Madison, who is employed by the Virginia State Department of Corrections and has no prior criminal record, told Troopers he was traveling from Virginia to Maine for a hunting trip. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to SP Tarrytown, where he was charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree.
Madison was later released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to the Town of Clarkstown Court on September 20, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
