NYS Assembly Declares Haitian Heritage Month, Honors Rockland County’s Haitian Community

The New York State Assembly recently passed a resolution declaring May 2025 as Haitian Heritage Month, celebrating the rich culture and contributions of Haitian Americans, with a special focus on communities in Spring Valley and Nyack.

Assemblyman Aron Wieder, who represents Assembly District 97, spoke about the resilience and vibrancy of his Haitian neighbors and their role in shaping the heart of Rockland County. He praised their cultural impact, citing local events such as Spring Valley’s Parade of Unity and Nyack’s trilingual poetry readings as powerful examples of their influence.

The resolution also acknowledges Haiti’s historic legacy, including the Haitian Revolution, while celebrating the community’s art, music, and advocacy. Local leaders, including Nyack Trustee Pascale Jean-Gilles, welcomed the recognition and underscored the community’s role in strengthening the region.
