Elizabeth Mitchell, 45, of Nyack, has pleaded guilty to a full slate of charges stemming from a deadly drunk driving crash, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced. Mitchell admitted to aggravated vehicular homicide, multiple counts of manslaughter and assault, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, among other charges.
The plea deal includes a promised sentence of 7 to 21 years in state prison. Prosecutors had recommended the maximum sentence of 8â…“ to 25 years. Sentencing is scheduled for July 22, 2025, before Judge Djinsad Desir.
The charges stem from a June 9, 2024 incident in Orangetown, where Mitchell drove nearly 70 mph in a 30 mph zone while intoxicated. She ran a stop sign and crashed into a metal barrier and fence, killing front-seat passenger Jahaad Muhammad and seriously injuring rear passenger Devonte Jones. Mitchell fled the scene without reporting the crash.
DA Walsh noted that Mitchell has prior DUI convictions in California, including one involving a hit-and-run. The case was investigated by the Orangetown Police Department and prosecuted by Supervising ADA Meghan Garvey and Executive ADA Michael Dugandzic.
