On Wednesday morning, the Village of Airmont and the Town of Ramapo celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Lorna Lane Park, the area’s latest recreational space, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event brought together local officials, community leaders, and residents to witness the transformation of this once-underutilized piece of land into a vibrant community space. The project was funded through a $200,000 grant from Rockland County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which were allocated to the Town of Ramapo and subsequently granted to the Village of Airmont.
Located at North Lorna Lane and Dorchester Drive in Airmont, the renovated Lorna Lane Park is designed to serve hundreds of families in the neighborhood, providing a green space for relaxation and play. Village officials highlighted their hopes that the park will contribute significantly to the community’s quality of life.
The park’s development followed a thorough bidding process initiated last year. Key figures in the project included Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Village of Airmont Board of Trustees, Assemblyman-elect and current Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder, Rockland County’s Director of Purchasing Paul Brennan, and Mona Montal. During a site inspection last year, various companies presented proposals for revitalizing the park. The village also held a community meeting to gather input from neighborhood families on what they’d like to see in the park.
Supervisor Michael Specht expressed his enthusiasm for the new park with Monsey Scoop, saying: “Lorna Lane Park is a wonderful addition to our community. This project demonstrates what we can accomplish by working together and listening to the needs of our residents. I’m excited to see families enjoy this space for years to come.”
Senator Bill Weber, who attended the ceremony, shared his thoughts with Monsey Scoop: “I want to thank the Town of Ramapo for investing in our parks, which is an investment in our families and our future. Lorna Lane Park will be a place where memories are made and friendships are formed. I’m thrilled to see this project come to life for the people of Airmont.”
Assemblyman-elect and current Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder also expressed his support, telling Monsey Scoop, “This new park is a testament to our commitment to building a community that values quality of life and safe spaces for our children. I was happy to help secure the funding for this project and am proud to be part of this celebration, knowing how much it will mean to families in this area.”
Rockland County Legislator Joel Friedman added, “Creating beautiful, accessible parks like Lorna Lane is crucial for the well-being of our communities. This space is more than just a playground; it’s a place where families can gather, relax, and enjoy our shared surroundings. It’s wonderful to see this vision realized for Airmont residents.”
Community Askan and activist Yehuda Zorger told Monsey Scoop, “I would like to thank our trustees who worked tirelessly to make this a reality, as well as Assemblyman-elect Aron Wieder, Town Of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht and Mona Montal, whose efforts were essential in bringing this project to life.”
Airmont’s Deputy Mayor Shimon Moses also shared his excitement with Monsey Scoop, saying, “This new playground will be a wonderful addition to our community, providing a safe and enjoyable space for our children to play and grow.”
With its new playground, seating areas, and open spaces, the renovated Lorna Lane Park is already shaping up to be a cherished spot in Airmont, bringing new life to the neighborhood and strengthening the sense of community.
