The New York State Police announced they will increase patrols across the state during the Fourth of July holiday weekend as part of a special traffic enforcement campaign targeting impaired and reckless driving.
The enforcement period begins on Friday, July 3, and continues through Sunday, July 5. During the campaign, motorists can expect to encounter DWI checkpoints, dedicated impaired-driving patrols, and increased enforcement against distracted driving, speeding, and other traffic violations.
Troopers will also be monitoring compliance with New York’s Move Over Law, reminding drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles.
As part of the operation, State Police will deploy both traditional marked patrol vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE) vehicles. These unmarked vehicles blend into everyday traffic, allowing Troopers to more effectively identify motorists using handheld electronic devices or committing other violations before activating emergency lights.
During last year’s Fourth of July enforcement campaign, New York State Police issued 10,497 traffic tickets, arrested 210 impaired drivers, issued 258 distracted driving citations, and wrote 301 Move Over Law violations.
Officials are urging motorists to plan ahead before celebrating. Drivers are encouraged to designate a sober driver, use a taxi or rideshare service, call a sober friend or family member, or take public transportation if they have been drinking. Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
The Fourth of July enforcement initiative is partially funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation, which also offers the free “Have a Plan” mobile app to help drivers find safe transportation options and learn about New York’s DWI laws.
State Police reminded the public that impaired driving can result in arrest, the loss of driving privileges, significant fines, higher insurance costs, and other expenses that can total thousands of dollars—while also putting countless lives at risk.
