New Walkway Bridge Over NYS Thruway Near Mario Cuomo Bridge Now Open

A new pedestrian and bicycle bridge spanning the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is now officially open, providing a safer and more accessible connection for walkers and cyclists traveling between Rockland and Westchester Counties.

The 270-foot-long bridge is a key feature of a $13.9 million project led by the New York State Department of Transportation. It serves as a vital link between the Cuomo Bridge’s shared-use path and the popular Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, allowing uninterrupted bike and foot travel across the Hudson River.

The 16-foot-wide, 15-foot-tall structure was constructed using modular sections that were assembled on Route 9 and lifted into place over the Thruway during an overnight operation. This off-site construction approach minimized traffic disruptions and enhanced safety during installation.

In addition to the bridge itself, crews installed lighting, guiderails, and climb-deterrent fencing to ensure a secure experience for users. The bridge now offers an expanded route for Rockland residents who frequently access the Cuomo Bridge’s path for exercise, commuting, or recreation.

State officials say the project enhances regional connectivity and strengthens the Hudson Valley’s reputation as a destination for outdoor activity.

  1. Where can anyone park to use this? Every time I use the Path Landing lot to use any of these other trails that this facility supposedly integrates, the staff threatens to tow my car. I can’t even use the EV chargers with staff harassment. The path itself is shadeless , diesel soaked and noisy. The rest of the facility is also unusable in the heat. They won’t even allow anyone to sit in their air conditioned or heated car and have a beverage before braving that path. All the promises for this facility were false. What is it even for? Also, you misspelled Tappan Zee Bridge.
