On Friday afternoon, New Square’s Ershte Hilf received an urgent call about a brush fire on Adams Lane. Upon arrival, responders discovered that the fire had been ignited by a piece of food that fell from a BBQ grill, which set a garbage can ablaze, and that quickly spread to nearby grass, trees, and cardboard boxes, creating heavy flames.
The Hillcrest Fire Department and Ramapo Police Department were promptly dispatched to assist. Thanks to the quick actions of Ershte Hilf volunteers, the fire was contained before it could cause further damage. Hillcrest firefighters then worked to fully extinguish the flames.
The rapid spread of the fire was attributed to ongoing dry weather conditions, which made the area highly susceptible to ignition. Authorities remind residents to exercise caution with outdoor grilling and open flames, especially during dry periods.
No injuries were reported, and the incident serves as a testament to the effective collaboration between local emergency response teams.
