A special community presentation was held Wednesday night in New City to educate residents about the importance, complexity, and ongoing maintenance of the Eiruv of Monsey, which spans numerous neighborhoods throughout Rockland County, including section 12 – New City.
The event was organized at the request of local Rabbonim, who sought to give community members a greater understanding of what an eruv is, the halachic significance behind it, and the extensive weekly efforts required to properly maintain it.
Guest speaker Rabbi Ezra Sarna, Director of Halacha Initiatives at the Orthodox Union, addressed attendees and spoke about the intricate halachic and practical aspects involved in maintaining a kosher eruv for a large and growing community, And a presentation of the OU ERUV app system, Which is being used by The Eiruv of Monsey.
During the presentation, representatives of “The Eiruv of Monsey” showcased the systems currently in place to inspect, monitor, and repair the eruv on a continual basis. Organizers explained that crews conduct thorough weekly inspections across many miles of boundaries, checking poles, wires, lechis, and other components to ensure the eruv remains fully operational before each and every Shabbos.
Attendees were also shown how The Eiruv of Monsey has continued to enhance and modernize its operations over the years through upgraded infrastructure, improved monitoring systems, and ongoing maintenance efforts aimed at serving the expanding community.
Organizers said the evening was intended not only to inform residents, but also to help foster appreciation for the large-scale work and coordination required each week to maintain one of the world most extensive eruv systems.
