A Rockland County native is in custody following a deadly mass shooting at a waterfront bar in North Carolina that left three people dead and several others injured late Saturday night.
Authorities identified the suspect as Nigel Max Edge, 40, of Oak Island, who grew up in New City and was known locally as Sean Debovoise. A graduate of Clarkstown High School North in 2003, Edge later served as a Marine sniper.
According to police, Edge allegedly opened fire from a boat into a crowd gathered at the American Fish Company, a popular waterfront bar in the historic town of Southport, about 30 miles south of Wilmington. The shooting, which officials described as “highly premeditated,” killed three people and injured at least five others.
Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said the location appeared to have been specifically targeted, though he declined to provide further details. Witnesses reported that Edge briefly stopped his boat near the shore lined with bars and restaurants before firing into the crowd and speeding away.
Roughly half an hour later, a U.S. Coast Guard crew spotted a man matching the suspect’s description at a public boat ramp on Oak Island. Edge was detained at the scene and handed over to Southport police for questioning.
He now faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
