A school bus crash on the Parkway Monday evening prompted swift action from a local hero. Matt Goldman, an EMT with the Tri-Boro Volunteer Ambulance Corps (TBVAC), was driving home when he witnessed the bus overturn. Without hesitation, he pulled over and immediately began assisting the children in evacuating the vehicle.
Amid the rescue efforts, Matt was alerted that a 14-year-old boy was trapped beneath the wreckage. Drawing on his six years of EMT experience, he provided aid and remained with the injured boy until additional emergency responders arrived. The young boy remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Matt’s commitment to emergency response began at just 16 years old when he joined TBVAC as a high school sophomore. His dedication to healthcare and community service has led him to pursue a nursing career, and he is set to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) this May.
In recognition of his actions, the Borough of Montvale honored Matt Goldman as the 2025 Hometown Hero during Thursday night’s Mayor & Council meeting. He was also presented with the Key to the City, a distinction awarded only three times in Montvale’s history.
On Tuesday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy personally called Matt, expressing his admiration and the state’s pride in his efforts.
The ceremony was attended by local officials, community members, and first responders who stood in solidarity with Matt, highlighting the deep appreciation for those who dedicate themselves to helping others.
