A troubling discovery at a Monsey supermarket has prompted a community-wide alert. On Tuesday, store management uncovered credit-card skimming devices attached to several checkout terminals. Ramapo Police were called to the scene, along with Chaverim of Rockland, whose volunteers assisted in reviewing the machines and surveillance footage.
Video analysis showed two suspects entering the store and discreetly attaching the devices to the payment terminals before quickly leaving. Their identities remain under investigation.
By Wednesday morning, Chaverim of Rockland alerted supermarkets and retail stores across Monsey, urging them to thoroughly inspect their payment terminals and remain vigilant for skimming activity. Additional guidance was issued to prevent further incidents.
The investigation remains active.
Tips to Prevent Credit-Card Skimming
For Store Owners
-
Inspect all terminals daily, especially before opening, checking for loose parts or attachments.
-
Compare all machines to ensure they look identical; skimmers often look slightly off.
-
Check PIN pads to confirm they are firmly secured and cannot be easily lifted.
-
Install cameras focused directly on payment devices.
-
Use tamper-evident seals and verify they are intact.
-
Train employees to spot suspicious behavior and device tampering.
-
Report anything unusual immediately to Ramapo Police and Chaverim of Rockland.
For Consumers
-
Inspect the machine before inserting a card—avoid terminals that seem loose, bulky, or misaligned.
-
Use credit over debit when possible, as it offers better fraud protection.
-
Cover the keypad when typing your PIN.
-
Enable transaction alerts on your banking app.
-
Monitor statements regularly and report unauthorized charges immediately.
-
Use tap-to-pay or mobile wallets, which are more secure against skimmers.
