The Monsey Fire District has reached an agreement with Spring Valley Fire District #1 under which the Monsey Fire Department will begin providing fire suppression services to the district’s coverage area, which includes the Old Nyack Turnpike and Rock Hill Road corridor.
The process began in late 2025 when Spring Valley Fire District #1 approached the Monsey Fire District with a request to assume fire suppression responsibilities for the area beginning in 2026. Over the following months, Monsey Fire Department leadership conducted a comprehensive review of the proposal and evaluated its operational impact.
As part of the review process, discussions were held with county fire officials, elected officials from the Village of Spring Valley, and leadership of the Village of Spring Valley Fire Department.
Following those discussions, the Monsey Fire District and Spring Valley Fire District #1 finalized an agreement this week. The transition will take effect once dispatch codes and other operational updates are completed.
According to plan, the Village of Spring Valley Fire Department will continue to play a key role by serving as an automatic mutual aid department for the area. Officials said the arrangement strengthens the longstanding partnership between the Monsey and Spring Valley fire departments while ensuring continued cooperation and reliable fire protection services for residents and businesses in the community.

You do realize that the Monsey Fire Department anyways responds to calls out in South Spring Valley, so it’s not like anything has changed. But okay. Sure. Have it your way.

Would rather pay and get service to protect our homes and lives than pay a bit less and possibly lose lives. Spring Valley fire department has been unable to respond properly to fires over the last few years and has no plans or ability to fix the issues.
I wish these firefighters well and hope for their continued safety. The Monsey Fire Department, I’m guessing, is probably one of the most experienced and combat trained organizations in the country. These guys and girls have literally seen it all.
I suspect this has something to do with the rise of the Matzilei Aish heimishe “fire department” who, contrary to rumor, are actually professionally trained at a nationally-accredited fire training school in New Jersey. (And I know at least two of these guys–they are not a pack of untrained, unprofessional and unsafe clowns and wannabe heroes who don’t know what they’re doing.)
That said, the whole controversey between our local Fire Departments and Matzilei Aish (which is there not to undermine our appreciated Fire Departments but to simply put local fires out quicker) can easily be solved with a simple solution that is staring us all in the face: Incorporate Matzilei Aish into the official Fire Department–make them a full-fledged “First Response” department of the Fire Department. It’s a win-win: Small fires are responded to in far less time than it takes for volunteers to drive in to local firehouses, gear up, roll out, and arrive on scene; less damage, destruction and death; and bigger fires are contained (or even reduced) until the “big guns” show up. Matzilei Aish gets their desire to respond to fires quicker, residents get their properties protected and saved sooner, lives that might be lost can be rescued in time, and the Fire Department gets their position and experience respected and embraced. Why is no one pushing for this?
