A potentially dangerous situation was narrowly avoided on Shabbos morning, January 17, after a member of the Monsey Fire Patrol detected an active gas leak inside an unoccupied residence.
At approximately mid-morning, a Fire Patrol member who is a highly trained firefighter from Somerset County was conducting a routine patrol in the area of Prime Lane when an alarm was heard coming from a nearby residence. Upon investigating, it was determined that the home was unoccupied, with the occupants away for Shabbos, while an active gas leak was filling the unit.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Fire Patrol immediately requested assistance from the Monsey Fire Department, which responded swiftly to the scene. Firefighters worked in coordination with Orange & Rockland Utilities to secure the gas line and ventilate the residence.
Officials said the rapid response prevented the gas from spreading into adjacent attached units, averting what could have become a major and dangerous incident.
