In a crucial effort to enhance emergency response capabilities, the Monsey Fire Department conducted an ice water rescue training session on Sunday at Willow Tree Park Lake, preparing volunteers for winter-related emergencies.
Rockland County Fire services is home to three types of water rescue teams: Dive, Swift Water, and Ice Water. Monsey Fire Department has two of these specialized units, excluding the Dive team. The latest training session focused specifically on ice water rescues, equipping responders with essential skills for life-saving operations in frozen conditions.
Approximately two dozen volunteers participated in the training, with a mix of experienced responders undergoing refresher exercises and new members learning the procedures for the first time. The session covered critical techniques such as breaking open ice, safely entering the frigid water while wearing dry suits, maneuvering the rescue boat, and securing rescuers with ropes to ensure safe and efficient extractions.
The Monsey Fire Department continues to prioritize rigorous training to maintain readiness for emergency situations, ensuring the safety of both rescuers and the community during extreme weather conditions.
