A suspected credit card fraud scheme involving intercepted mail deliveries led to an arrest on Monday following a coordinated response by Chaverim of Rockland and Ramapo Police.
The incident began when a UPS driver alerted a local homeowner that he had been stopped down the block by an individual claiming to be there to collect an envelope. The man reportedly presented identification bearing his own photograph but under a religious-sounding name. The driver became suspicious, declined to hand over the envelope, and instead proceeded to the intended address to warn the homeowner.
Shortly afterward, the homeowner’s family discovered unusual activity on their Chase account, including a $50 charge for an expedited replacement credit card. Chaverim of Rockland was contacted and a police report was filed with the Ramapo Police. Despite the report, similar attempts were made in the following days, with the suspect continuing to track packages and confront the UPS driver.
After realizing the deliveries to the home were not being released, Sources tell Monsey Scoop that the suspect redirected a newly ordered credit card to Rockland Kosher Supermarket, which offers a package drop-off service. Store management coordinated with Chaverim of Rockland and agreed to immediately notify them if anyone attempted to pick up the package.
On Monday, the suspect came to the store to pick up the envelope, again presenting fraudulent identification with his photograph and matching the name on the envelope, Chaverim of Rockland and Ramapo Police responded immediately.
As officers attempted to speak with the suspect in the store, he fled on foot. A brief pursuit ensued, and the suspect was arrested moments later in the parking lot of Shoppers Haven Mall and placed under arrest.
Sources tell Monsey Scoop that at the time of his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of multiple stolen credit cards and several fraudulent identification documents.
Police also identified a second individual believed to be a getaway driver who fled the scene by car onto Main Street in Monsey. He was later stopped by Ramapo Police, identified, and released pending further investigation.
Chaverim of Rockland is urging the public to carefully review bank and credit card statements and to immediately verify any unfamiliar charges, particularly small fees, such as expedited card replacement charges, which may be used to test stolen account information. Anyone who notices suspicious activity is encouraged to contact their financial institution and local authorities promptly.
