MAILBAG: When We Act With Achdus, Our Voices Are Heard

There is a powerful lesson our community should take to heart from recent events in New Jersey. As Phil Murphy prepares to sign the state budget, approximately $750,000 has been allocated to Lakewood community organizations, including Tomchei Shabbos. This did not happen by chance. It is the direct result of a tzibur that stands together, organizes responsibly, and consistently shows up.

Lakewood is widely known as a community with overwhelmingly Republican voter registration. Yet that reality did not prevent leaders in Trenton from engaging with the community and recognizing its needs. Why? Because when a community votes in large numbers, party labels matter far less. Elected officials understand that a tzibur that participates with consistency and seriousness must be taken into account.

The message is simple and timeless: it is not so much which way we vote, but that we vote, and that we do so together, with Achdus. When we act as one, our collective strength is undeniable, and the results speak for themselves.

Here in Rockland County, we have seen a glimpse of what is possible. Assemblyman Aron Wieder successfully secured a $10,000 state grant for Tomchei Shabbos of Rockland. That support is appreciated and meaningful, and it shows that when we engage and build relationships, progress can be made.

At the same time, it also highlights how much more could be accomplished if our community were fully organized and consistently present at the ballot box. Tomchei Shabbos of Rockland carries a tremendous responsibility, supporting countless families with dignity and care, yet it does not receive sustained state funding commensurate with its role. This is not a reflection of the organization’s importance or the community’s need, chas v’shalom. It is a reminder that influence follows participation.

If we vote together in Achdus, look how much we can accomplish. Other Torah communities have shown that respectful civic involvement is a form of hishtadlus, one that strengthens our mosdos, supports our chesed organizations, and ensures our voices are heard.

The path forward is clear. It is time for Rockland County to organize, unite, and learn from communities that have translated Achdus and participation into real results. When we show up together, we are taken seriously, and we earn our rightful seat at the table.
