MAILBAG: Residents Raise Safety Concerns on Old Nyack Turnpike

Monsey Scoop received the following message from residents of the Old Nyack Turnpike area, who are asking for community support and greater awareness regarding traffic and pedestrian safety conditions on the roadway:

“Dear Town and County Officials,We, the undersigned residents and community members, are deeply concerned about the unsafe traffic and pedestrian conditions on Old Nyack Turnpike in Monsey. With increased residential and institutional development on both sides of the roadway, families and children are forced to cross a busy, fast-moving street with no adequate pedestrian safety or traffic-calming measures in place. The situation has become increasingly dangerous and requires immediate attention. While we support responsible neighborhood growth and welcome new projects, we respectfully urge the Town of Ramapo and Rockland County officials to prioritize and finalize a traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety solution for Old Nyack Turnpike before approving or implementing further developments that will increase traffic in the area.We ask the Town and County to act urgently so improvements can be implemented as soon as possible, ideally before the upcoming summer season, when pedestrian activity increases significantly. Our community stands united in support of this request and looks forward to working cooperatively with officials to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.— Concerned Residents”

According to organizers, nearly 200 signatures were collected in under two days, reflecting strong community concern over the current conditions. Residents say the effort is being driven “for our kids” and for the overall safety of the neighborhood.

  1. I support this campaign. I just wanna make awareness to make sure to Email your representative in County and State to make sure they are aware of this issue and being able to personally help.

With a public letter all you’ll get is noise for two days. You need to constantly check in with them and ask for change.

  2. Stop the incessant overdevelopment of what used to be a calm, quiet, peaceful single family areas, where single family homes sat on .5 acres and not apartment buildings on .0001 acreage

  3. We emergency need a crosswalk WITH a crossing light at corner Old Nyack TPKE and Saddle River Rd. There are constantly cars turn either in or out of Old Nyack onto Saddle River. And since it is allowed to turn right on red, there is no reprieve and it becomes IMPOSSIBLE to cross safely. It is so dangerous!!!!!!! The only way to cross is hold your breath and hope no car will run you over:(

  4. Don’t complain when you caused it
None of the development would get approved and happen if the developers don’t pay off people. Every development has a safety and traffic check. This should’ve been taken into account then. If you don’t like it don’t live there don’t support the developers that caused this.
Simply put, don’t expect to change when you caused it.
    Live with it
