MAILBAG: Monsey Must Stand By Those Who Stand By Us

As a long-time resident of Monsey for over 35 years and a committed voter who hasn’t missed an election in the last 16 years, I feel compelled to address an unsettling trend in our community. Traditionally, we’ve supported politicians who have listened to and supported our needs, especially at the state level, where we often lacked strong representation in the New York Assembly and Senate.

Now, as we approach the race for State Senate, we have two candidates, each with a record in this very role. One candidate has consistently turned his back on our community, even going so far as to make speeches against the Jewish residents of East Ramapo and neglecting to attend community events. In contrast, the other candidate has shown up for us, advocating for our needs and maintaining a presence at community functions.

The choice should be straightforward: vote for the candidate who has proven his commitment to us out of Hakaras Hatov. However, some in our community are now backing the candidate who, after losing his seat before due to our votes, is suddenly showing interest in our support.

So, the question we must ask ourselves is this: Will we reward politicians who have stood by us, or will we send a message that our support can be won even by those who have disregarded our needs in the past? I firmly believe in the former, and that’s why I will cast my vote for Bill Weber for State Senate on Row C—because of the issues within the Rockland County GOP that still need addressing.

Sincerely,

Yossi S.
