A life-threatening incident was narrowly avoided on Wednesday afternoon, thanks to the quick thinking and decisive action of a Rockland Hatzolah volunteer’s wife — and the entire episode was captured on video, which circulated widely on Thursday.
The incident occurred as the woman waited at a local bus stop for her son’s school bus. When the bus arrived, another young boy, who was not scheduled to disembark at that stop, stepped off. The woman immediately noticed something was wrong — the boy was choking on a water bottle cap. Acting swiftly, she performed the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodged the cap, saving the child’s life.
Another parent present quickly called Rockland Hatzolah, who responded within minutes. By the time they arrived, the boy was breathing again and out of danger, thanks to the heroic intervention.
This near-tragedy serves as a powerful reminder about the dangers of small objects and the importance of teaching children not to put non-food items in their mouths — especially during the summer months when water bottles are commonly used. It also underscores the critical importance of knowing basic first aid and life-saving techniques, which in this case, made all the difference.
