Students at Willow Grove Elementary School received a unique lesson in law enforcement today when they were introduced to K9 Remy, Rockland County’s first Certified Electronics Detection Dog.
Accompanied by her handler, Detective Tim Hayes of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Investigative Unit, K9 Remy demonstrated her highly specialized skills. Unlike traditional police dogs trained to detect drugs or explosives, Remy is trained to locate the chemical compounds found in electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, USB drives, and SD cards. These skills are crucial in investigations involving child exploitation and other crimes where suspects may attempt to hide critical digital evidence.
During the visit, Detective Hayes showed students how Remy can detect hidden electronics with remarkable accuracy. She is one of only a few hundred certified electronic detection dogs in the nation.
“K9 Remy’s visit gave children a chance to learn about teamwork, community safety, and the important role law-enforcement K9s have in the community,” said Chief of Detectives Deirdre Smith of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.
Remy was named in honor of Rockland native Welles Remy Crowther, the “Man in the Red Bandana,” who became a symbol of heroism after saving lives during the September 11th attacks.
“We are proud to have K9 Remy as part of our team,” said District Attorney Tom Walsh. “Her work helps ensure that those who commit crimes against children are held accountable.”
