Judge Denies Release of Serial Shoplifter from Spring Valley Accused of Repeated Thefts at Montvale NJ Wegmans

A Spring Valley woman with a long history of theft arrests has been ordered to remain behind bars after repeatedly targeting the same supermarket in Montvale, New Jersey.

According to Montvale Police Chief Douglas McDowell, 49-year-old Elena Shamkovich developed a pattern over the past two and a half years: she would take a cab from Rockland County to the Wegmans off West Grand Avenue, load up on energy drinks and other merchandise, and leave without paying—only to skip court dates that followed.

Despite being banned from the store, police say Shamkovich returned around 7:00 a.m. on October 21, stealing several items before being apprehended by responding officers moments later.

She is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny, charged with shoplifting, defiant trespassing, and possession of drug paraphernalia, in addition to numerous outstanding warrants for prior offenses.

Chief McDowell said this latest arrest marks at least a dozen incidents involving Shamkovich and the same Montvale Wegmans, making her a “serial offender who’s repeatedly taken advantage of the system.”

After years of revolving-door justice, a judge has now refused to release Shamkovich, keeping her in custody as she awaits further court proceedings.
