In a ceremonial event held last night at the Town of Haverstraw Town Hall, John Gould was officially sworn in as the Chief of the Haverstraw Police Department. Gould steps into the role following the retirement of Chief Peter Murphy, who concluded his 36-year tenure with the department on Monday.
Born and raised in Haverstraw, Gould is an alumnus of North Rockland High School. He launched his law enforcement career in 2003 with the Mount Vernon Police Department, where he served in various roles, including patrol, the Street Crimes Unit, and the Narcotics Unit. Gould joined the Haverstraw Police Department in 2006 as a patrolman and was promoted to Sergeant in 2012, where he managed patrol duties and the department’s Accreditation program.
In 2017, Gould was promoted to Lieutenant, overseeing the patrol division before taking on the role of Administrative/Operations Lieutenant. By 2022, he had advanced to the rank of Captain, serving as the department’s second in command and overseeing the Detective Bureau, Special Operations Unit, and civilian staff.
Gould’s extensive experience and deep roots in the community mark a new chapter for the Haverstraw Police Department as he assumes his new leadership role.
