The Stony Point Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Charles Wood, Shield #601, the first full-time police officer in the history of the department, whose service helped lay the foundation for modern policing in the Town of Stony Point.
Born in 1940 in the Bronx, Officer Wood answered the call to public service during a pivotal period for the community. According to a 1969 newspaper account, he was appointed by then-Chief Stephen Scurti, becoming the department’s inaugural full-time officer and playing a central role in establishing its early operations and traditions.
Officer Wood was deeply devoted to the Stony Point community and took great pride in his service. His badge number, 601, later became the department’s headquarters base radio identifier—a designation that remains in use today and stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy.
Beyond his career in law enforcement, Officer Wood was a Civil War history enthusiast, a 1975 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas College, and enjoyed motorcycles and boating. Above all, he wished to be remembered as a dedicated police officer who proudly served the people of Stony Point.
In 2017, Officer Wood returned to Stony Point for the department’s 50th Anniversary celebration, a visit that reflected the lasting bond he maintained with the department and the community he served.
Officer Wood passed away on March 27, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer, while residing in Tennessee. He is survived by his beloved wife Gayle, his brother Robert, a niece, and several nephews.
The men and women of the Stony Point Police Department honor Officer Wood’s service, remember his contributions, and express their gratitude to those who came before them and built the department they proudly serve.
Officer Charles Wood’s service and legacy will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.
