HUNDREDS OF BLOWOUTS LATER: NYC to Repave Dangerous GWB Ramp Heavily Used by Rockland County Commuters

As reported by YWN in their viral March 2024 article, “FIFTY BLOWOUTS! 5 Chaveirim Branches Respond To Massive Blowouts Incident In Manhattan”, the ramp off the George Washington Bridge has long been a nightmare for motorists — including countless Rockland County commuters who use it daily. Chaverim of Rockland has responded numerous times to assist stranded drivers at this location, including during the infamous “fifty blowouts” incident that left vehicles disabled across multiple lanes.

Over the past few years, the hazardous roadway has caused hundreds of flat tires and blowouts, leaving drivers stranded and creating massive traffic backups during peak hours. Chaveirim volunteers from multiple branches — including Rockland, Brooklyn, and Manhattan — have spent countless hours changing tires and assisting motorists, often late into the night and in dangerous conditions.

Following months of advocacy and coordination between Chaveirim leadership and city and state officials, the NYC Department of Transportation has confirmed that it will repave the problematic GWB ramp — a long-awaited safety improvement for thousands of daily commuters.

🚧 Work Schedule:

  • Phase 1: Southbound lanes closed October 27–31 (11 PM–5 AM)

  • Phase 2: Northbound lanes closed November 3–7 (11 PM–5 AM)
All lanes will reopen daily between 5 AM and 11 PM.

Brooklyn Chaveirim coordinator Shloime Fleischmann told Monsey Scoop that this project is the direct result of persistent effort and collaboration.

“We want to thank NYS Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Pinny Ringel from NYC DOT, and Ira Tenenbaum, Assistant Commissioner at NYC Emergency Management, for their partnership and support in making this project a reality,” Fleischmann said.

With repaving work set to begin, Rockland County commuters who rely on the George Washington Bridge for work and travel can finally look forward to a smoother and much safer drive into Manhattan.
