The US National Weather Service (NWS) in New York, NY, has issued a warning for potential heavy rainfall and flash flooding from late Tuesday into Wednesday. Here’s what residents need to know:
Weather Outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday, August 6-7:
- Heavy Rain with Possible Flash Flooding: A slow-moving front may stall over or just south of the area from Tuesday into Wednesday. This could lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon and evening, becoming more widespread Tuesday night. The extent of the rainfall on Wednesday will depend on the front’s exact location, which remains uncertain.
- Strong Winds and Thunderstorms: Isolated instances of strong to damaging winds may accompany thunderstorms on Tuesday.
- Flash Flooding Risk: Prolonged heavy rain could result in isolated or scattered flash flooding. Rainfall totals are forecasted to be between 1-2 inches, with localized higher amounts possible.
O&R’s Emergency Response Preparations:
Orange & Rockland Utilities (O&R) is mobilizing its emergency response workforce ahead of the forecasted storms. High winds, lightning, and downed trees pose significant threats to electric service, and O&R is preparing to address potential power outages.
- Response Teams: In addition to O&R company and contractor crews, tree removal experts, customer service operators, and other emergency response team members, O&R is bringing in 40 mutual aid crew members to assist with emergency responses throughout the storms.
