Thiells Fire Department responded Monday afternoon to a brush fire near Ecology Lane in Haverstraw, where flames quickly spread across an area about 70 by 30 yards and shot up as high as 30 feet.
Firefighters arrived on scene and called for additional help, including a brush truck and tanker the Stony Point Fire Department. The Joint Regional Sewage Company also assisted by providing a tanker truck, which helped knock down the bulk of the fire before it could spread further.
Thiells’ ATV unit worked to extinguish remaining hot spots, while additional trucks supplied water to keep the operation going. Crews remained on scene for about an hour to fully secure the area.
A newly constructed building nearby suffered some damage, with parts of the siding melting from the heat, but thankfully the fire did not reach the structure itself.
