The Town of Haverstraw Police Department has released additional details regarding Sunday evening’s altercation in Garnerville involving an off-duty NYPD Assistant Chief, which Monsey Scoop reported.
According to Haverstraw Police, officers responded at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2026, to a report of a fight in progress in the parking lot of ShopRite at 56 West Ramapo Road in Garnerville.
Upon arrival, officers located two adult males near the Rosman Road side of the building. Both individuals sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation before being treated and released.
Police say the preliminary investigation revealed that one of the individuals involved was an off-duty member of the New York City Police Department who was carrying a legally owned handgun at the time of the incident. During the altercation, the firearm was reportedly removed from the individual’s waistband, causing one round to discharge. Authorities confirmed that the discharged round did not strike either individual or any bystanders.
Investigators further stated that the dispute may have stemmed from allegations that the other male involved had been harassing the NYPD member’s daughter. Police noted that the daughter and the other individual are acquaintances only and have never been involved in any form of domestic relationship.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Town of Haverstraw Police Department in coordination with the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.
