The Town of Haverstraw Police Department is investigating an incident in which an officer was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon in the Village of Haverstraw.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 1:10 p.m. on Riverfront Drive, when officers initiated a vehicle and traffic stop for an infraction. As officers attempted to engage with the driver, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, striking one of the officers before fleeing the scene.
Authorities immediately broadcast a description of the vehicle along with its license plate information over police radio. A responding officer subsequently located the vehicle traveling on West Street, where it was safely stopped. The occupants were taken into custody without further incident.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“This incident is one of many examples of the dangers our officers face every day while performing their duties,” said Chief John Gould Jr.. “I am grateful that our officer’s injuries are not life-threatening and proud of the swift and professional response by our personnel in quickly locating the vehicle and safely taking the individuals into custody. We will not tolerate actions that put our officers or community members at risk.”
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
