Haverstraw Police Chief Peter Murphy Retires After 36 Years of Service

After an illustrious 36-year career, Chief Peter Murphy of the Haverstraw Police Department is set to retire. Murphy, a West Haverstraw native, began his law enforcement journey as an officer for the Village of Haverstraw. Following the merger of the police departments in 2006, he transitioned to serving as an officer for the Town of Haverstraw.

Chief Murphy’s career is marked by significant milestones:

  • 1988: Joined as an Officer
  • 1997: Promoted to Sergeant
  • 2008: Advanced to Lieutenant
  • 2017: Appointed Interim Chief
  • 2018: Officially became Chief of Police

The Haverstraw community is invited to honor Chief Murphy’s dedication and service at a special Walk-Out ceremony on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 2:00 PM. The event will be held at the front entrance of the Haverstraw Police Department.

In conjunction with Chief Murphy’s retirement, Captain John Gould, who has been serving as the “second-in-command,” will be sworn in later this week as the new Chief of the Haverstraw Police Department.

The Haverstraw Police Department, along with the community, expresses immense gratitude for Chief Murphy’s contributions and wishes him a fulfilling retirement.
