Haverstraw Police Arrest Man After Violent Attack With Screwdriver

On Sunday evening, September 14, 2025, at approximately 5:25 p.m., Haverstraw Police were dispatched to a residential address in the Village of Haverstraw for reports of a man assaulting a woman.

Police say the suspect approached an adult female outside a residence, grabbed her by the neck, and held a screwdriver to her throat. The victim managed to fight him off and call for help. Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which was later confirmed through surveillance footage.

A countywide alert was issued, and on Monday morning, September 15, at around 9:15 a.m., investigators located the suspect’s vehicle in Stony Point. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled on foot through a residential neighborhood but was apprehended shortly thereafter without incident.

The suspect was identified as Eduardo Hernandez, 49, of Garnerville, NY, and transported to Haverstraw Police Headquarters. He has been charged with:

  • Kidnapping in the 2nd Degree (Class B Felony)

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree (Class D Felony)

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree (Class A Misdemeanor)

Haverstraw Police thanked the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, Stony Point Police Department, Rockland County Intelligence Center, and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation and arrest.

The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact Haverstraw Police at 845-354-1500.

Officials noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
