A 20-year-old Haverstraw man was arrested late Saturday night after police say he fled from an officer, fought with police during his apprehension, and was found carrying a loaded firearm.
According to the Haverstraw Police Department, an officer was patrolling Route 9W in the Village of Haverstraw at approximately 11:48 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, when he observed an individual crossing the roadway against a designated “NO WALK” pedestrian signal, nearly causing a collision with a passing vehicle.
Police said that when the officer stopped and attempted to speak with the individual, he fled on foot, prompting a foot pursuit. During his apprehension, the individual became combative and resisted arrest, resulting in an injury to a Haverstraw Police officer.
Following the arrest, officers discovered that the suspect was in possession of a loaded firearm, according to police.
The suspect was identified as Rinoe Mitchell, 20, of Haverstraw. He was charged with multiple offenses, including Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm in the 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd and 4th Degrees, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the 2nd Degree, and Assault in the 2nd Degree for causing injury to a police officer.
Mitchell was arraigned in Haverstraw Village Justice Court and remanded to the Rockland County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond, or $200,000 partially secured bond.
The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted the Haverstraw Police Department with the investigation.
All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
