A massive fire tore through an abandoned warehouse at 29 Samsondale Avenue late Sunday night, prompting a large multi-agency response and an hours-long battle to bring the flames under control. The fire was reported at approximately 11:20 p.m., with arriving units finding heavy fire conditions throughout the structure. Due to the unsafe condition of the building, firefighters were forced to conduct an exterior attack as flames engulfed the property.
The West Haverstraw Fire Department led the response, receiving mutual aid from numerous departments across Rockland County, including Stony Point, Thiells, Monsey, Hillcrest, Haverstraw, Congers, and West Nyack. Spring Hill EMS and Haverstraw EMS were also on standby, along with New York State Police and Haverstraw Police, as crews worked through the night under challenging conditions.
Sources tell Monsey Scoop that the building had been abandoned for years, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire and the dangerous conditions faced by first responders. Firefighters worked tirelessly for hours, bringing the bulk of the fire under control by around 5:00 a.m.
However, just minutes later at approximately 5:40 a.m., the fire rekindled, sending crews back into action. Additional assistance was requested from New City, Valley Cottage, and West Haverstraw units, who returned to the scene to assist in knocking down the remaining hotspots. Firefighters remained on location until about 10:30 a.m., when the fire was finally declared fully extinguished.
No injuries have been reported at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with sources indicating that arson is being considered.
