Governor Kathy Hochul Signs Legislation to Address Case Backlog in Family and Civil Courts, Including Rockland County

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed groundbreaking legislation aimed at reducing the case backlog in family and civil courts across New York State. This new law will see the appointment of 28 additional family court judges, including one new position in Rockland County.

“Family and civil courts deal with some of the most sensitive issues New Yorkers face, and backlogs and delays have long hampered their effectiveness,” said Governor Hochul. “This legislation provides our courts with the necessary tools to address these backlogs and deliver the fair and efficient justice system New Yorkers deserve.”

Senator Bill Weber, the only co-sponsor of this legislation, expressed his support, stating, “Families going through a rough time should not have to undergo months of agony before their case is heard and resolved. With that in mind, I was proud to co-sponsor this bipartisan bill to help clear the backlog in Rockland County Family Court.”

The addition of new judges is part of a broader initiative to tackle the persistent backlog in family court cases. The state’s Office of Court Administration has committed to continually assessing the need for judges in various communities to ensure a balanced and efficient allocation of judicial resources.
