Governor Hochul to Inaugurate New Veterans Housing Facility in Rockland County on Wednesday

Rockland County is set to witness a significant on Wednesday as Governor Kathy Hochul visits the newly constructed 14-unit veterans housing facility at Rockland Homes for Heroes. Scheduled for Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 2:30 PM, the event will take place at the historic Camp Shanks site in Tappan, New York.

The ceremony will commence with an introduction from John Murphy, President of the Board of Rockland Homes for Heroes, followed by remarks from Governor Hochul. This event marks the completion of a crucial project designed to provide affordable housing for homeless and disabled veterans in the community.

Located on the east side of Western Highway at the intersection of Independence Avenue, the new facility occupies the historic grounds of Camp Shanks, where over one million soldiers gathered in 1943 to prepare for D-Day. Today, this site serves as a symbol of hope and support for veterans in need.

Rockland Homes for Heroes initially built eight housing units on this site in 2013. The latest addition includes 14 fully furnished apartments, each equipped with modern appliances to offer a comfortable and supportive living environment for veterans. The project also features a community room where residents can access various supportive services and connect with fellow veterans.

John Murphy emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to veterans, stating, “This project represents our dedication to providing not just housing, but a community for our veterans.”

Residents are encouraged to attend and join in celebrating this significant milestone for Rockland Homes for Heroes and the veterans it serves.
