Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Aron Wieder that expands residency options for correction officers employed at local jails in Rockland and Orange counties.
Under the new law, correction officers may now reside in either Rockland or Orange County, any adjacent New York county, or—if they were employed as of April 4, 2026—within a 45-mile radius of their workplace. The legislation is designed to provide local correctional facilities with greater flexibility in recruiting and retaining qualified personnel.
Assemblyman Wieder said correction officers perform an essential and demanding job every day and deserve policies that help recruit and retain the best workforce possible. He thanked New York State Senator Pete Harckham, Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco for his leadership, his legislative colleagues, and Governor Kathy Hochul for signing the legislation into law.
As previously reported by Monsey Scoop, the legislation passed the New York State Assembly on March 30 before advancing through the Senate and reaching the Governor’s desk.
The new law takes effect immediately.
