Governor Kathy Hochul has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Pedestrian Safety Month in New York State, coinciding with the National Pedestrian Safety Month campaign led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The initiative is aimed at raising awareness about pedestrian safety and encouraging both drivers and pedestrians to follow key safety practices while sharing local roadways.
The Ramapo Police Department, along with other Rockland County police departments, announced that they will be actively participating in the statewide campaign throughout October. Departments will be sharing pedestrian and driver safety tips on their social media platforms and will take part in the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s (GTSC) “Operation See! Be Seen!” program. This initiative includes both education and enforcement actions targeting violations of state pedestrian safety laws.
In addition, Rockland police departments will participate in National School Bus Safety Week and Operation Safe Stop, a zero-tolerance enforcement program designed to crack down on drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. The effort underscores the importance of protecting children and raising awareness about the serious consequences of violating school bus safety laws.
“Whether you’re walking, driving, or biking—safety is everyone’s responsibility,” the Ramapo Police Department said in a joint statement with other Rockland law enforcement agencies. “Our officers will be out in force this month to enforce traffic laws, educate the public, and protect those most vulnerable on our roads.”
Residents are urged to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and do their part to help make Rockland’s roadways safer for all.
