On October 8, 2024, at approximately 12:09 PM, Stony Point Police responded to a report of suspicious activity involving a vehicle whose occupants were seen stealing mail from a mailbox in Tomkins Cove. Patrol officers quickly located the vehicle on Mott Farm Road and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, however, refused to comply and sped off at a dangerously high speed. Officers briefly lost sight of the vehicle but soon discovered it off the road, down an embankment, engulfed in flames.
As officers approached the wreck, a 15-year-old juvenile exited the vehicle and immediately surrendered. The Stony Point Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames.
A large-scale search for the remaining suspects followed, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Haverstraw Police Department, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office (with K-9 units and Aviation support), NY State Police, and the Ramapo Police Department’s K-9 Unit.
The search resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Sekou Touray from the Bronx, NY, who has been charged with Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree, Petit Larceny, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The juvenile has been charged with Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree and Petit Larceny.
Two other individuals apprehended at the scene were interviewed by detectives and released without charges. Sekou Touray has been issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Stony Point Justice Court on October 17, 2024, at 1:30 PM. The juvenile was processed and released to a family member.
Police are still searching for at least one additional suspect involved in the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Stony Point Detective Bureau at (845) 786-2422.
