Residents across northern New Jersey, Rockland County, and surrounding areas experienced a minor earthquake Friday afternoon, marking the second significant tremor to hit the region in less than a year. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 2.4-magnitude earthquake struck just after 1 p.m., with the epicenter located one mile outside Paramus, New Jersey, at a depth of approximately 4.78 miles.
By 2:15 p.m., the USGS had received 426 reports of shaking from across Bergen County, northern New Jersey, Rockland County (Suffern and Airmont), and even parts of New York City. Though the earthquake caused no reported damage, it startled many residents, who quickly took to social media and local community forums to share their experiences and reactions.
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing that such minor quakes, while rare, can occur in this part of the country. No injuries have been reported, and officials remind residents that this event serves as a reminder to remain prepared for any unexpected natural disturbances.
