Nita Lowey, the longtime congresswoman who represented New York’s 17th Congressional District—including parts of Rockland County—for over three decades, has passed away at the age of 87.
Lowey, a trailblazer in Washington, made history as the first woman to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee. A dedicated public servant and a staunch advocate for her constituents, she played a crucial role in securing federal funding for infrastructure, education, and healthcare initiatives across the region.
Her family confirmed that she passed away on Saturday at her home in Harrison, following a prolonged battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Throughout her career, Lowey was a strong ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a close friend of the Clintons. Known for her bipartisan approach and fierce advocacy, she was instrumental in bringing resources to Rockland County and beyond, fighting for better transportation, improved environmental protections, and support for local law enforcement.
Congressman Mike Lawler released a statement following her passing, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Congresswoman Nita Lowey. Her bipartisan spirit, commitment to our community, and dedication to the country inspired me, and my thoughts are with her family as we honor her legacy in New York’s 17th.”
Her passing marks the end of an era in New York politics, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and service to the community.
