First Snowfall of the Season Brings Slippery Conditions to Rockland County

Winter made its presence felt overnight as the first snowflakes of the season blanketed Rockland County from Thursday evening into early Friday morning. While the snowfall was a picturesque start to the season, it brought treacherous road conditions, causing a string of accidents.

The New York State Thruway Authority issued a warning urging drivers to “USE EXTREME CAUTION,” as icy conditions made roads dangerously slippery. Several accidents were reported both on the Thruway and local streets as drivers struggled with the hazardous conditions.

Chaverim of Rockland’s NightWatch unit was out in full force, responding to dozens of calls throughout the night. Volunteers worked tirelessly to assist drivers dealing with disabled vehicles, accidents, downed trees, and other emergencies caused by the icy conditions. Their efforts provided a much-needed safety net during the challenging weather.

By Friday morning, the snow had cleared as rain moved through the region, leaving behind wet but navigable roads. Authorities continue to remind drivers to prepare for winter driving conditions and to adjust their speed during inclement weather.
