On Wednesday evening at approximately 7:42 PM, the Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 responded to a fire at 245 Summit Park Road. The blaze originated in the garage of a single-family home and rapidly spread to the first and second floors. Assistant Chief Ben-Jacob was on the scene within a minute of being dispatched, providing a prompt size-up and issuing initial orders to the incoming units.
Chief Gessner oversaw the coordination of additional units as they arrived, immediately focusing efforts on establishing a reliable water supply. Thanks to a swift and aggressive interior attack, the fire was brought under control quickly. Hillcrest Fire Company received support from the Thiells, Spring Valley, and Monsey Fire Departments. EMS crews from Spring-Hill Ambulance and the Ramapo Police Department were also on hand to assist.
The Hillcrest Fire Company No.1, an entirely volunteer organization, serves the communities within the Town of Ramapo, Town of Clarkstown, and the Town of Haverstraw. They operate from three strategically located firehouses to ensure optimal response times across their fire district.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department BCI Unit.
The home belonged to a local Rabbi, who, along with his family, narrowly escaped the disaster with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The timing of the fire was crucial; had it occurred two hours later, the family might not have survived. Unfortunately, the Rabbi did not have adequate insurance coverage, and it is anticipated that it will take 90 to 120 days before any insurance assistance is received.
In the meantime, the family has been provided temporary shelter, but they have lost everything in the fire. The community is rallying to support them, and a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to aid in their recovery and rebuilding efforts.
