On Monday, May 20, 2024, Officer Christian Once officially assumed his role as Ramapo High School’s new School Resource Officer (SRO), succeeding Officer Robert Navarro, who has been promoted to Sergeant in the Ramapo Police Department.
Officer Once, a graduate of Ramapo High School’s class of 2012, is well-acquainted with the school. After high school, he attended Rockland Community College and John Jay College before joining the New York Police Department, where he served for four years in the Bronx. For the past five years, he has been with the Town of Ramapo Police Department, often seen cheering on his former high school’s soccer and football teams.
“The Ramapo Police Department wants to ensure that School Resource Officers truly understand the students and the community they serve,” said Captain Dan Hyman of the Town of Ramapo Police. “Ramapo High School is Once’s alma mater. He speaks both English and Spanish fluently, has an outgoing and friendly personality, and we are confident that the students will be able to relate to him.”
Officer Once brings a unique perspective to his role. He immigrated to the United States from Ecuador at the age of six, and he understands the challenges faced by newcomers and English Language Learners. A product of the East Ramapo Central School District, Once attended Fleetwood Elementary, Eldorado Elementary, Hillcrest, Pomona Middle School, and Ramapo High School, emphasizing his deep roots in the community.
While Officer Navarro set a high standard, Officer Once is seen as an ideal successor. His appointment has been warmly received, with the Ramapo Police Department expressing confidence in his ability to excel as the new SRO.
The Ramapo Police shared a message on social media: “Once a Gryphon, always a Gryphon! We’re confident PO Once will excel as the new School Resource Officer at Ramapo High School. Huge thanks to the East Ramapo Central School District and Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, along with the entire town board, for valuing these vital partnerships!”
