The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that the earthquake felt earlier today in parts of Westchester, Rockland County, and New York City registered a magnitude of 2.7. The epicenter was located in northern New Jersey, just outside New York City, with tremors felt as far north as Rockland County and surrounding areas.
The quake struck at approximately 12:11 p.m. and, despite widespread reports of shaking, there are still no reports of damage or injuries. The tremor is considered minor, though noticeable, particularly in multi-story buildings.
This marks the second earthquake to impact the region in less than a week, following a 3.0 magnitude tremor in Hasbrouck Heights on August 2nd. While rare, earthquakes of this magnitude can be felt widely across the Tri-State area due to the region’s geology.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no further activity is expected at this time.
