Drunk Driver Crashes Into Ramapo Police Vehicle on Route 202, Officer Escapes Injury

Just after midnight, a Ramapo Police officer stationed on Route 202 to guard a downed tree narrowly escaped injury when a drunk driver slammed into his marked patrol vehicle, which had its emergency lights activated. Another civilian vehicle was also struck in the crash.

Police say the officer was inside the vehicle at the time but was fortunately uninjured. Following an investigation at the scene, one of the drivers involved was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated and unlicensed operation, with three prior DWI convictions on record. The suspect is expected to be arraigned shortly. The police cruiser sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene.

Officials emphasized that the incident underscores the daily dangers officers face while protecting the public—even during routine calls like guarding a roadway hazard. It also highlights the ongoing issue of impaired driving across the county.

“This serves as a serious reminder of the risks faced by first responders and the dangers posed by those who continue to drive drunk,” the department said in a statement. “We urge everyone to make responsible choices—drive sober, stay alert, and help protect those who are protecting you.”

Drunk drivers are a threat to everyone. This time it was an officer. This has nothing to do with being a cop. But anyway…

  2. Did you give the name of the person? Is this person possibly an illegal taxi ? They seem to have a reputation to be drinking and driving in crashing.
3DUIs should not be on the road.
