UPDATE – SUFFERN: Standoff on Kensico Court Ends Peacefully; Suspect in Custody

The standoff in The Knolls neighborhood of Suffern has come to a safe and peaceful conclusion. The suspect, who reportedly brandished a knife during a domestic dispute and barricaded himself inside his Kensico Court home, surrendered to police without incident around 12:45 p.m. He is now in police custody and being evaluated at the Suffern Police Department.

Suffern Mayor Michael F. Curley issued an updated statement following the surrender:

“As of 12:45 p.m., the situation has been neutralized and the person has surrendered and is in police custody. Within 30 minutes of this message, you can enter your homes on Kensico Court. We thank you for your cooperation and patience. Stay Safe. Suffern Strong. Suffern First.”

Earlier in the day, residents in the area were ordered to shelter in place as Suffern Police, Rockland County REACT (SWAT), Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Faist EMS, and other agencies responded to the scene. The suspect was alone in the home, and all other occupants had exited safely prior to the standoff.

A developing situation is unfolding in The Knolls neighborhood of Suffern, where a man has barricaded himself inside his home on Kensico Court following a domestic dispute. The suspect reportedly brandished a knife during the incident. Sources tell Monsey Scoop that all other occupants safely exited the home.

Suffern Police are on scene along with the Rockland County REACT (SWAT) Team, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Faist EMS, and other emergency personnel.

The Suffern Police Department has issued the following urgent advisory:

“The Suffern Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are currently at the scene of an incident in the Knolls. We are asking residents in the area to SHELTER IN PLACE. Please DO NOT leave your residence until further notice.”

 

Suffern Mayor Michael F. Curley also released a statement to residents:

“If you live in the area of the Knolls at Ramapough housing development, please listen to all Police Department instructions. You will be allowed to enter your neighborhood. If you live on Kensico Court and you are home, please stay in place in your unit—otherwise, please stay away from the area of Kensico Court so the Police can do their work.

We have a young male who is barricaded in a room of his house. He is the only one in the house. The Police Department is on scene and the area is secured. Our intention is to keep this person and all residents and Police Officers safe.

We have called in for assistance from other agencies so we may keep a safe situation for all residents and people involved.

We appreciate your cooperation. Stay Safe. Suffern Strong. Suffern First.”
