A Delaware man was arrested on multiple felony weapons charges and DWI after New York State Police discovered a loaded handgun during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Orangetown.
State Police said troopers from SP Tarrytown stopped a 2015 Toyota Camry shortly before 7:30 p.m. on August 5 after observing the vehicle traveling northbound on I-87 in violation of traffic laws.
During the investigation, troopers discovered a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun equipped with a 15-round magazine inside the vehicle.
The driver, identified as 30-year-old Kellin Patrick Sweeney of Wilmington, Delaware, was taken into custody and transported to SP Tarrytown for processing. Police said Sweeney registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08%.
Sweeney was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for an ammunition feeding device, and criminal possession of a firearm, all felonies. He was also charged with driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher.
Sweeney was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, $15,000 bond, or $30,000 partially secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Orangetown Court on Tuesday, August 11.
The arrest was handled by members of New York State Police Troop T and the Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
State Police reminded motorists that firearm laws vary between states and that anyone entering or traveling through New York is responsible for complying with New York State firearm laws.
